Bob and Carol and Lois and Clark

Determined to save Lois from the death penalty, Clark breaks her out of prison and the two become fugitives. Meanwhile, Professor Jefferson Cole's plans broaden to include killing the entire population of Metropolis. This episode concludes a two-part story arc.

Plot[]

Perry calls the D.A.'s office to explain that he never testified at Lois's trial, but gets nowhere. Lois is sentenced to death. Superman breaks her out of jail, arguing that he is still serving justice because she is innocent. Anticipating that authorities will be watching the skies for him flying away with Lois, he takes them on the road. Lois remains upset about her conviction, feeling that all the work she did as a reporter has gone unappreciated. She only feels worse when Clark brings out a massive list he compiled of people with a grudge against her, to narrow down who might have framed her. While they are visiting a diner out in the country for lunch, Lois is recognized by the proprietor, Lou. A police officer comes by on a motorcycle, and Lou tells him he hasn't seen anyone. He tells Lois that he is grateful for how she fights for the common people and is confident that she is innocent of murder, which raises Lois's spirits.

Cole wants revenge not only on Lois, but Superman and Dr. Klein. Cole was employed at S.T.A.R. Labs on Project K, a project conceived by Dr. Bains and commissioned by the U.S. Defense Department to develop a weapon of mass destruction with Hybrid Kryptonite. To help fund the project, Cole sold U.S. weapons technology to hostile foreign nations. Dr. Klein informed Lois of this, she wrote a story on it, and Superman put Cole in jail.

Feeling pangs of conscience over helping frame Lois, Sheila Danko begins recording a video confession. Cole catches her and murders her. Clark hears the police report on the murder, procures a copy of Danko's video, and uses his super-vision to spot Cole's reflection on a broken mirror in a trash bin. Meanwhile, Lois finds out that the bullet casing disappeared from evidence when the guard was summoned away by a call from the D.A.'s office, casting suspicion on the D.A. Clark x-rays the hall of justice but can't find the casing. Lois suggests that D.A. Clemmons may have it on his person. After confirming this via x-ray vision, Clark approaches Clemmons and "accidentally" knocks him over. While helping him up, he pickpockets the bullet casing.

Cole uses the hallucinator to create an image of Superman. "Superman" tells Dr. Klein a terrorist cell has learned the location of the Hybrid Kryptonite and he must relocate it by taking it to a secret drop-off point. Klein complies. Superman learns of the deception when he brings the bullet casing to Dr. Klein for analysis. Moments later, a news bulletin from an anonymous source says that Klein and Superman delivered the Hybrid Kryptonite to a terrorist group which will use it to wipe out the population of Metropolis.

Cole's underling Wolcott spots Lois and takes her to Cole's hideout, an abandoned bell tower. There Cole uses his invention to summon rain laced with Hybrid Kryptonite. However, Superman proves to be immune to Hybrid Kryptonite. He uses his superspeed to create a vortex which dissipates the Hybrid Kryptonite clouds. Meanwhile, Lois kicks on the lever which activates the bells. This both knocks Cole down before he can shoot her and attracts Superman's attention. He captures Cole and Wolcott.

Cole is imprisoned, and though there remains no definitive evidence linking Clemmons to the conspiracy, he is forced to leave office in disgrace. Dr. Klein's testimony on the hallucinator and the bullet casing clears Lois of the murder. The acting D.A. opts not to prosecute her for her jailbreak, preferring to clear the scandal of the case from the office as soon as possible.
