Professor Emil Hamilton is a Metropolis-based scientist, who was very proficient in physics and engineering, and had an extensively equipped laboratory. He functionally became Superman's technical advisor for many years, helping him with a wide variety of scientific problems, including the creation of the Containment Suit.

Unfortunately, he came to believe that Superman was slowly destroying the earth inadvertantly, and became the villain Ruin, devoting himself to killing the man of steel.
