Jack Kirby was an American artist that created the New Gods/Fourth World for DC. When he drew Superman DC editors redrew his unique S-shield and distinctive faces, believing it didn't fit the "house style" established by Curt Swan.

Kirby is widely known as the "King" of superhero comic art, innovating dynamic posing as well as influencing design of cosmic energy and technology on virtually every artist that followed.

History[]

Super Powers[]

Kirby drew numerous comic covers and promotional art supporting the Super Powers toyline. He also designed figures for Kenner, including Lex Luthor's Warsuit which would be worked into mainstream continuity in 1983, eight years after he left the company.

The New Gods and Kirby's Fourth World[]

Kirby was invited to DC with the promise of being able to write and draw anything he wanted. The result was the New Gods, but DC editors soon insisted that he tie-in Superman characters in some way to gain attention of readers. This is why Darkseid made his debut in the pages of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen.
