The Russian hero known as Superman is an alternate version of the Superman we know, from an alternate reality in which baby Kal-L landed not in Smallville, Kansas but rather in Soviet Russia and was raised by the government. This Superman, while still a hero, is antithetical to the United States, and has defeated some american heroes, such as Green Lantern.
His archnemesis is Lex Luthor, who is a scientist employed by the United States government to create heroes like Superman. Luthor's copied version of Superman, however, proves a failure and endangers more lives. Luthor created many monsters to battle Superman.
Eventually, Brainiac began manipulating the Man of Steel. Luckily, Superman was able to defeat him.
Despite son and father having Kal-L and Jor-L names in the text, akin to original Jerry Siegel names, mother is called Lara, revision of the name that was first time introduced by Don Cameron in More Fun Comics #101 version of Krypton
Also despite comics taking original Siegel's idea for Superman being a man from the Future Earth, his abilities are still sun based, which was introduced in the comics lore by Weisinger and Binder during the time when Siegel wasn't writing Superman to explain why Supergirl has superpowers despite living in low gravity area (Siegel's definitive explanation of Krypton galvanizing its people as seen in K-Metal story was never officially published), Not to mention in original Siegel's version Kryptonians and people on the Future Earth were powerful even on their home planet/in their present time, until Don Cameron's version made people of Krypton "normal" while on their homeplanet.
Because Superman in this story isn't Kryptonian he doesn't have weakness for kryptonite, and only can be weakened by simulated rays of red sun.
