Superman XII is a descendant of Superman from sometime in the distant future who took on the mantle of Superman, as did many in the long familial line.
He was involved in the Pollution War, and in that war his genes-- and hence the genes of the Superman Dynasty after him-- were permanently altered to become weak against ocean water.
