Lois and Clark's first date is hampered by the resurrection of Lex Luthor by Doctor Gretchen Kelly. This episode concludes the Luthor resurrection subplot which had been running since the beginning of the season, and features the final appearance of recurring villain Dr. Gretchen Kelly.
Plot[]
In a cavern under Metropolis, Dr. Gretchen Kelly meets with Nigel St. John (Lex Luthor's former P.A) and brings Lex Luthor back from the dead. Luthor goes through his accounts and finds out his former attorney Sheldon Bender has taken his entire fortune. He asks Nigel to bring him Bender and find out about Lois Lane. Luthor is losing his hair as a side effect of his resurrection.
At The Daily Planet, Clark asks Lois out for a date for the first time. Lois hesitates to answer, but eventually accepts. Clark's friend in the F.B.I. sends him a photo of Gretchen meeting with Nigel. Clark with X-Ray Vision sees Sheldon Bender written on a piece of paper in Gretchen's hand.
Lois and Clark go to speak with Bender, only to see him being abducted by Nigel's partner Ramine. Clark changes to Superman and stops the getaway van but finds it empty, Ramine having taken Beldon underground via a trapdoor in the van and a manhole. Luthor threatens to throw Bender into a rat pit unless he gives him his money back, but Bender has it all tied up in real estate, so he instead tells Luthor that he can get him Kryptonite.
Lois meets Luthor disguised as an old man, attempting to discern if she still loves him. At the Metropolis Prison, Luthor, Bender and Nigel see Rollie Vale, who was on the loose with a broken arm at the end of "Metallo" but has since replaced it with a robotic left arm and been apprehended. They make a deal of half a million dollars and Vale's freedom for the Kryptonite Vale used to power Metallo.
Lois and Clark learn the getaway van was loaned out to Ramine. Bobby Bigmouth tells them Ramine has his meals at the homeless shelter.
At The Daily Planet, Perry White finds a bomb put on his chair by Luthor, disguised as a cleaner. It is a pressure bomb, so it will go off if Perry leaves the chair. Superman saves him by flying the chair to the skies, pushing Perry off, and then catching him after the bomb explodes in midair. With the bomb squad out busy with the chair bomb, Luthor and the others break into their headquarters and make off with explosives and a remote trigger to set Vale free.
Lois meets Luthor, who removes his old man disguise. He tells her they should be together again. Lois says she no longer has feelings for him, but also declines his suggestion that she call the police and leaves him, saying that he's suffered enough.
Perry orders Lois and Clark to maintain surveillance on Bender, who is on his yacht, having claimed his kidnapping was just a prank by college friends. This forces Lois and Clark to cancel their first date and give their Pearl Jam tickets to Jimmy Olsen. They stay at a hotel near the yacht and have an "almost first date." The next morning they witness Bender bribing a judge to give Vale a new hearing. They go to confront Bender, but Bender is shot dead with a dart by Nigel.
Alerted by their contact at the homeless shelter that Ramine is there, Lois and Clark follow Ramine to Luthor's underground lair and find a map of the route Vale is being transferred to his hearing on. Realizing Luthor intends to break Vale out during the transfer, Clark tells Lois to go to their jeep while he calls the police. Lois is captured by Gretchen. She tries to reason with Gretchen, warning that Luthor is insane and might kill any of them on a whim, but Gretchen insists he would never hurt her.
Luthor and Nigel detonate a bomb on a car, forcing the police van holding Vale to stop, and knock out the guards. They take Vale back to Luthor's underground lair. Vale gives Luthor the Kryptonite, hidden in a compartment in his robotic arm. Luthor plans to kill Superman with it, and gives it to Nigel for safekeeping. Vale demands his money. Luthor attempts to doublecross him, but Nigel and Ramine doublecross them both, revealing they have been working for Intergang all along, using Luthor as a pawn to get them the Kryptonite. Luthor shoves Vale at Nigel and Ramine, but Nigel shoots Luthor in the chest with his crossbow. Ramine knocks out Vale and he and Nigel depart. Furious, Gretchen hurls Lois into the rat pit. Luthor tries to save her, but Gretchen holds him back, saying that she is the one who truly loves him. He responds by shoving her into a high voltage fuse box with wires, killing her.
Superman arrives and rescues Lois from the pit. Trying to escape through suicide again, Luthor grabs the damaged wires, but Superman stops him by using Heat Vision to destroy them. Luthor tells Lois to tell Superman that she once loved him. Lois says nothing. Luthor is sent to prison.
Back at the Daily Planet, Lois and Clark discuss rescheduling their first date in vague terms, but Perry tells them he and Jimmy knew that they had begun to date.
