Zaltar was a Kryptonian scientist who lived in the isolated Kryptonian community named Argo City, in a pocket of trans-dimensional space. He showed his favorite student Kara Zor-El to see a unique and immensely powerful item known as the Omegahedron, which he has borrowed without the knowledge of the city government, and which powers the city. However, after a mishap, the Omegahedron is blown out into space. He decides to sentence himself to the Phantom Zone for his mistake. Much to the distress of Zaltar and Kara's parents, Kara followed it to Earth in an effort to recover it and save the city. Zor and Allura did not know what would happen to their daughter as they were unfamilar with space travel. Zaltar, who had planned to use the ship to visit Earth, said he could not know all effects but promised it would protect her.
He stayed in the Phantom Zone for a long time in quiet misery. Supergirl was also banished there, albeit by a spell cast by Selena. An unconscious Supergirl was then taken away by a shadowy figure, who then revealed himself as Zaltar when he brought to her to a more lighted area.
Supergirl rallied his help in escaping the Zone, and together the two nearly made it to the top. However, tidal forces started to rise. Zaltar pushed Kara into the dimension portal, but stumbled and fell. Kara screamed Zaltar's name in horror as she watched him fall to his death. However, Zaltar was able to posthumous aid Kara during her final fight, when Selena had the upper hand and cast a poweful spell on her which Supergirl could not overcome, Zaltar's voice called and said "You can. On, girl!"
Thus far, he has only appeared in the movie Supergirl.
